Joining the ISK Staff

At the International School of Krakow, we believe that our students should be empowered to be creative and critical thinkers, encouraged to discover and pursue their individual passions and talents in a supportive and caring community. Every day students and teachers work together in active, collaborative, inquiry based learning experiences, drawing upon our diverse intercultural backgrounds. Everything we do is intentionally designed to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes which our students will need to find success as global citizens. Because regardless of where they are coming from – or heading to – all our students have the capacity and responsibility to contribute positively to an ever-changing world.

Because of that, we are always looking for caring professionals who want to join us in our commitment to learning and to empowering our students to impact the world.

What to Expect

It’s a difficult decision, but it may be the right one …

As part of a close-knit International community, our teachers need to embrace their prominence in the lives of our students.  Parents, students, and staff work very closely together in the education of our students and it is important that our teachers understand the value of integrating with the community to which we belong. Our staff get together outside of school regularly and it is not unusual to be at a social event with parents, teachers, staff and administration all involved.  If you are hoping to live in an us-and-them situation, then ISK is not the place for you.

As professionals we are dedicated to continuously honing our craft and in improving the learning of our students.  Collaborative Learning Teams, ongoing Professional Development, work on various programs and planning within the Understanding by Design framework are all part of our commitment to our students. Teachers also contribute to an extensive program of extra curricular activities for our students, helping students to develop holistically in reaching their full potential.

In return, our teachers can expect to benefit from an amazing level of support from their colleagues and parents, and sincere gratitude from students who truly appreciate their efforts and expertise.  It also doesn’t hurt to live in one of Europe’s most visited historical cities which also serves as hub for air travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

ABOUT WORKING AT ISK

What are the requirements to work at ISK?

While qualifications may vary by position, all teachers are required to hold a degree in their area of focus and a valid teaching license. We also require background and health checks. As a rule of thumb, we generally also ask for at least 3 years of experience in teaching, with overseas experience an asset. On the “soft skills” side of things it is imperative you can work well with others in a close community, and you have to be committed to students and their learning.

What are the salary and benefits like?

We will share specifics during the interview process should we decide to hire you. In the local market we pay very well. In the international market we may not appear as lucrative as some of the higher paying regions and schools, but it is enough to live on, travel regularly, and put away some savings.

What is the best thing about working at ISK?

The students. We have supportive parents, caring administration, and wonderful colleagues, but it’s the kids. Being a travel hub in a very interesting European city doesn’t hurt either, and Poland is an amazing country, but it’s the kids.

What is the most challenging thing about working at ISK?

There are two things really. First, we work hard. As a small school we have to be willing to help out and go beyond our classroom walls and it can be quite demanding. Second … winter. The winter months get cold and dark, but really it is the pollution that is the hardest to handle as coal is still used to heat homes leading to very poor air quality. That said, we all still love Krakow and ISK.

What are the staff like?

Our staff come from the US, Canada, throughout Europe and, of course, Poland.
We are around 33% foreign hire and have a mix of single and married teachers. Ages range from mid 20’s up through, well, older. We are an eclectic, multinational, committed group of professionals who love what we do, care for each other, and enjoy life.

What is the deadline for applying?

There is no real deadline, however, we tend to complete our hiring by early February and if we find the right candidate(s) we will close applications so it is best to apply early. We will have occasional late openings as well so if you find us after the regular hiring season there is no harm in getting in contact.
